This chapter describes progress in ship design accompanying the increase in tanker size during the 1950s and 1960s and the increase in container ship size since the 1990s. It also discusses socio-economic environmental changes affecting hull structural design, such as the emergence of specialized ships, change in hull form design, and vibration problems arising from the change of main engine and propeller design.
