Transverse Strength of Ship
摘要
Transverse strength of a ship deals with the strength of primary supporting members such as transverse frames and girders. In this chapter, various design tips about the transverse strength are explained, including long tapered face plate and snake head at end bracket toes, shape of transverse rings, etc. With respect to tankers, after reviewing the historical transition of the arrangement of primary supporting members affected by the change in general arrangement and social environment, several issues such as cross tie design, external and internal pressure, and transverse strength in fore and aft holds are discussed. About ore carriers, the focus is on the strength of the upper deck between hatches, transverse bulkhead, and the knuckled longitudinal bulkhead. The basis of the transverse strength of bulk carriers is the torsional rigidity of hopper tanks and shoulder tanks. Then, discussions are made on the hold length, design of hold frames and their supports, the strength at the bilge hopper knuckle part, and so on.
