The performance of a ship depends on the general arrangement. Vertical members such as side shell, longitudinal bulkhead and transverse bulkhead are very important as a basic framework to support vertical loading such as buoyancy and cargo loads via their shear rigidity. In this chapter, it is explained how to decide the bulkhead arrangement and the number of holds in the initial design stage from the viewpoint of hull structure design. Bulkhead arrangement in fore and aft part of the ship is also discussed.
