In this chapter, fracture mechanics and its application to the proper selection of grade of steel for shipbuilding application are explained, touching upon historical background of Liberty ships and T-2 tankers in USA. Then, fatigue strength design is discussed in association with construction tolerances with respect to welding bead shape, misalignment, angular distortion, and so on.
