The human skin, covering the human body, has multiple and fundamental functions. Besides its role as a mechanical barrier, it protects the human body against chemical, physical (such as UV rays), and biological aggression. Moreover, it actively participates in immune response, sensitive reception, vitamin D metabolism, body temperature, and electrolyte regulation. This complex and crucial organ has been extensively studied due to its role in health and disease, and this chapter aims to summarize the anatomical and histological features of the human skin together with a description of the embryonic development of its parts.

摘要

The human skin, covering the human body, has multiple and fundamental functions. Besides its role as a mechanical barrier, it protects the human body against chemical, physical (such as UV rays), and biological aggression. Moreover, it actively participates in immune response, sensitive reception, vitamin D metabolism, body temperature, and electrolyte regulation. This complex and crucial organ has been extensively studied due to its role in health and disease, and this chapter aims to summarize the anatomical and histological features of the human skin together with a description of the embryonic development of its parts.
