The History of Wound Care

As the future is a continuum of the past, it is important to review our predecessors’ discoveries, viewpoints, and mistakes. This chapter discusses the history of wound care from prehistoric times to the modern era in several sections. Part 1 speculates on wound care in our early ancestors through examples in our closest relatives. Part 2 discusses wound care practices documented in early medical writings in Mesopotamia. Part 3 highlights wound cases from ancient Egypt. Part 4 explores medical philosophies and treatments of ancient Greece. Part 5 reviews the evolution of wound care in ancient Rome as the empire expanded. Part 6 examines ancient Chinese medicine with respect to wound care and the practice of wound care in the late Zhou to early Han Dynasties. Part 7 reveals the development of plastic surgery practices in ancient India. Part 8 describes the advancement of surgery and amputation medicine in medieval and early modern France. Part 9 describes the medical discoveries of early modern Great Britain. Part 10 reviews the development of twentieth-century advancements, including antibiotics, compression wraps, negative pressure wound therapy, skin grafts, and skin substitutes. Part 11 looks into the future of wound healing.
