The advent of automated vehicles (AVs) on public roadways is transforming the transportation landscape, presenting challenges for first responders. While AV deployments are currently limited to only a handful of cities, these regions are leading the way in addressing the complexities of AV interactions through collaboration between emergency services, local governments, and AV developers. As AV deployment increases, first responders are currently tasked with adapting their procedures and training to ensure public safety, passenger care, and effective incident resolution. This chapter explores the key areas discussed where first responders interact with AVs, highlighting the challenges, progress, and areas requiring further research and development.
