To date, the psychological literature on the impact of fashion industry practices has focused primarily on individuals as consumers. This chapter makes an original contribution to this literature by exploring the industry’s impact on its own workforce. Taking an innovative approach which brings together organisational psychology, occupational health psychology, and literature on the fashion industry workforce, the authors provide unique insights into the fashion industry as an employer. The chapter starts with an overview of theories and research detailing how job and workplace characteristics affect mental health. It then presents the limited evidence on what working in the fashion industry entails for professionals working in post-production roles. Next, the authors provide an in-depth account on the job demands and mental health of fashion designers, fashion models, and garment workers. They highlight the detrimental impact that work pressures seem to have on these workers’ mental health. They conclude with recommendations for how psychologists can help make the fashion industry a psychologically healthy workplace.
