The introduction to the book begins by summarising existing attempts to combine Marxist theory with Lacanian psychoanalysis. It then gives a general intellectual history of French Marxism up to and including the time Lacan was working, as context for the more detailed studies made in subsequent chapters. It ends by outlining why Lacan’s relationship to Marxism was far more complex and disruptive, but also productive, than has so far been appreciated.
