Damage Assessment of the 2022 Catastrophic Floods: A Study of Balochistan Province, Pakistan
摘要
Pakistan is the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change. The country has several urgent environmental issues that affect its population and economy. The monsoon, which is important for the country’s agriculture and water security, has become increasingly irregular in recent years specifically in 2022. In 2022 Pakistan received heavy monsoon rainfall that was three times more than the average rainfall of the previous 30 years. This study aims to assess the damages of the catastrophic floods of 2022 in the Balochistan province of Pakistan using primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected from the field observations and secondary data was obtained from different sources. The data was further analyzed to assess the damages of the 2022 floods in Balochistan. According to the results of the study, out of the total 34 districts in the province, 32 districts were affected by the floods caused by the heavy monsoon rains. The impacts include the loss of 336 people and 187 injuries including women and children, and the loss of 0.5 million of livestock. Other damages included the destruction of 241,659 houses, 58 bridges, 2221.98 km of roads, 475,721 acres of agricultural land, 24,414 solar panels, and around 1500 tube wells. The findings of the study can help policymakers and other relevant agencies such as provincial and national disaster management authorities to devise long-term strategies to reduce the impacts of floods caused by monsoon rains across the province in the future.
