Fidel Pagés Miravé: Discovery of Epidural Anaesthesia (Metameric Anesthesia)—War Surgery in the RIF (Morocco)
摘要
Fidel Pagés Miravé (1886–1923), a Spanish military surgeon, discovered lumbar epidural anesthesia in 1920, revolutionizing regional anesthesia. His groundbreaking technique involved injecting anesthetics into the epidural space, enabling effective pain management for surgeries. Despite its global adoption, Pagés’ contribution remained underrecognized internationally due to limited dissemination of his work. His publication “Anestesia Metamérica” in 1921 detailed the procedure, anatomy, and outcomes of 43 surgeries, showcasing his innovative approach. His contributions to war surgery (abdominal wounds and triage) and in oncology are still highly relevant. Tragically, Pagés died in a car accident in 1923 at the age of 37, leaving behind a legacy that continues to impact modern medicine.
