Fernando de Castro: Disciple of Cajal, Key Figure of the Spanish Neurological School and His Transcendent Discovery of Arterial Chemoreceptors in the Carotid Body
摘要
Fernando de Castro (1896–1967) constitutes a prominent figure in the Spanish Neurological School being the last direct disciple of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. He has made significant contributions to neurohistology, particularly in the understanding of the peripheral nervous system, clarifying the organization of sensory ganglia and discovering the arterial chemoreceptors in the carotid body. De Castro’s work advanced the study of synapses, sympathetic, and parasympathetic systems, establishing him as a leading expert. Candidate for the Nobel prize, he was not found in Madrid during the Spanish War. His legacy is preserved through his extensive scientific archive, now part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme.
