Joaquín Albarrán y Domínguez: Universal Figure in Urology

Joaquín Albarrán y Domínguez was born in 1860 in Sagua La Grande, Cuba. Orphaned at four, he was educated by his godfather, Dr. Joaquín Fábregas. Albarrán pursued medicine, move to Barcelona, then Paris gaining recognition for his academic brilliance in Urology. Disciple of F. Guyon In Paris he became an influential figure in urology, as head of Urology in the Hospital Necker and professor in the Sorbonne. His contributions in Urology at all levels, developing new techniques, treating severe urological sepsis and developing instruments like the Albarran’s nail, a cystoscope with guide to catheterize both ureters are very important. His book: “Médecine opératoire des voies urinaires” has been the best book of Urology until recently. Albarrán’s legacy is marked by his pioneering work in urology, impacting both the French and international medical communities.
