A Green Ally in the Path to Liberation: Reliance on Nature in Pāli Buddhist Texts
摘要
This chapter explores mostly two aspects in the Pāli discourses of the Buddha: 1) the relationship between wilderness and contemplative techniques; 2) ethical guidelines that may be applied to contemporary environmentalism; 3) possible Buddhist attitudes to the progress of technology and its application to ecology. Although the notion of climate change is absent in Pāli Buddhist literature, natural places, far from cities, towns and villages, are ideal conditions for disciples of the Buddha, for the Buddha himself (even after his awakening) and for all the ascetics (samaṇa) who leave their roles in society to devote themselves completely to the path to liberation. Selected passages from the Pāli Canon will demonstrate how forests, lakes, mountains and so on are therein ascribed various degrees of sacredness, by mentioning the presence of supernatural beings (like devas, nāgas or yakkhas) or by emphasizing the importance of living in their proximity to reach spiritual goals. The importance of natural surroundings will finally be examined in its relationship with technology (and artificial intelligence (AI) innovations) and in the light of some specific Buddhist teachings.
