I have argued elsewhere that an identifiable body of animal friendly discourse emerged in England from the sixteenth century; I termed this “nonconformist”. Always subordinate, it nevertheless resisted the dominant way of talking about animals, and had a disproportionate influence on pioneering law reform and the founding of welfare organisations such as the RSPCA. This book is about the nonconformist way of speaking for animals. In particular, it addresses their longing to manifest wonder and joy, and our office as humans to facilitate it. It looks in more detail at the way that the nonconformist language of resistance said novel things about the place of animals in specific human activities and institutions. It explores the nonconformist vision of creation as a song of praise; and its distinctive understanding of cruelty. I argue that it provides resources to look at the way humans treat animals from a perspective now foreign to most of us, enabling a fresh perspective. The introduction provides a brief summary of each chapter, and the interconnections between them.

摘要
