Oral Literature of the Banen Community
摘要
The oral literature of the Banen people is essential to the laws that regulate their daily lives. This literature includes various genres such as tales, poems, proverbs, and songs. In my research, I focused on pre-colonial literature to explore the core values and morals of the Banen community. While I collected some pieces of oral literature during my fieldwork, I also relied on Idelette Douglas’s collection to enrich my analysis. The process of creating and passing on oral literature reveals several traditional features, including authorship, audience engagement, modality, and craftsmanship. Furthermore, my analysis showed that themes, rather than strict literary genres, are more important for categorising the oral literature of the Banen people. Another key aspect is the link between this literature, spirituality, and law. It is understood that all laws originate from spirituality. Consequently, the strength of laws within the Banen community is deeply rooted in their spiritual significance. In essence, disobeying the law is equivalent to disobeying /kolo n’isim/ (the Great Creator).
