This chapter provides a thorough examination of the customs and beliefs prevalent within the Banen community of Cameroon, while also recognising the broader similarities shared among various African communities, despite some minor regional variations. The analysis reveals that spirituality is a crucial aspect of the social life of the Banen people. Every facet of their existence, such as language, law, agriculture, dreams, death, birth, and marriage, is infused with spiritual significance. In terms of gender roles, it is noted that women often face limitations in their participation in various societal activities; however, their contributions are vital, particularly in areas like agriculture and mourning rituals. At the top of the Banen community’s social hierarchy is the chief, a figure symbolising wisdom, peace, and prosperity. The ethnographic study of the Banen community uncovers valuable insights that advocate for the principles of peace, justice, and respect for different forms of authority, all of which are essential attributes of their customary law.
