The Sustainable Development Goals outline several interconnected goals related to water, food, and climate change, yet billions of people experience water and food insecurity across the globe every year. Water security incorporates the concepts of sustainable access, adequate quantities, and acceptable quality. Food security includes the concepts of availability, agency, access, utilization, stability, and sustainability. The modern food system, with heavy reliance on fossil fuels, has not significantly reduced water and food insecurity over the past few decades. Sustainable food systems, which limit fossil fuel inputs and greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water, reduce land degradation and conversion, and recognize the interconnectedness of actors and drivers across the system, have the potential to improve water and food security. Several food and water system solutions also exist that help mitigate climate change, including decreasing food waste, shifting to healthy plant-based diets, reducing conflict and crisis, and incorporating Indigenous Peoples knowledge in mitigation and adaptation strategies.
