This chapter expands on the concept of human intelligence as introduced in Chap. 1. It lays the foundation of understanding decision making, a major expression of human intelligence. Decision making might only be governed by the rational deliberation of the utility of an outcome, but research has shown that non-rational components may also strongly influence decision making. In medicine and nursing, evidence-based practice offers a methodology to strengthen the rational basis of decision making through evidence from studies while also respecting the values and preferences of patients. To better understand the breadth of human intelligence, we provide an introduction to social and emotional intelligence while highlighting their influence on improving care and contributing to the provider-patient relationship. While AI models excelled in performing individual isolated tasks, AI tools could not match human experts when complex, real world tasks in patient care had to be mastered. Although AI technology is intriguing and promises technical innovation in care, it remains the well-being of the patients that is at the core of medicine, nursing, and healthcare.

摘要
