Nuclear weapons became a principal tool for Vladimir Putin in his quest as President of the Russian Federation to restore the former (Soviet) Russian empire. Here we try to assess Russia’s nuclear capability and its future prospects. We are entering an era of uncertainty, which should be dealt with and prepared for. This is emphasised by the erratic and unpredictable policies of the United States in the mid-2020s, with potentially dramatic changes for European security. There is a strong need for the two European nuclear weapon powers, France and the United Kingdom to strengthen their nuclear deterrence capabilities with the aim of filling the void created by a more uncertain US extended deterrence in NATO.
