Situating Women’s Scripts Within the Feminization of Poverty

In the previous chapter, we examined practical steps that the government and private organizations pursued to alleviate or end poverty in Ghana. We noted that despite the various efforts, poverty alleviation has not been particularly successful for old women who reside in rural areas. We turn now to a theoretical perspective on women’s poverty, the feminization of poverty, to gage its utility in analyzing the poverty of old, illiterate women in a rural setting.
