This chapter considers the asymptotic estimation of an unknown input for a class of linear systems using a simplified observer structure. By a novel simple matrix decomposition technique, the unknown input is expressed in its simplest form, which contains only one output measurement, its first-derivative, and a linear function of the state vector. Thus, the unknown input can be estimated by using first-derivative of only one output measurement and a reduced-order functional observer.
