摘要
Up until the rise of organic plastics in the twentieth century [1, 2], there was no other material that had such a dramatic impact on the world as did glass. The previous chapters have attempted to cover the origin and development of this important medium from its Mesopotamian beginnings in antiquity through the rise of Bohemian glass in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While this coverage should not be considered comprehensive, efforts have been made to present the main lines of development of silica glass, from its various early soda-lime compositions to the later rise of potash-lime compositions following the collapse of the Roman Empire [3, 4].
