In this chapter I examine the process of the enrolment of archaeology by anthropology and ethnology by charting the positions of all three disciplines on the cognitive map of British science during this period. The British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) provides the ideal forum through which to pursue this analysis by clearly demonstrating the intersectiuon between the rhetoric of science and the practical disciplinary politics involved in writing human history in Victorian Britain.
