In this chapter I return to a focus on understanding the importance of connecting archaeological theory with the empirical, and in doing so to further explore the reasons why theory building in archaeology has proved to be both difficult and contentious. I have previously discussed the causes of theoretical divergence and argued that this divergence is a clear expression of attempts to understand the ways in which archaeological data and perspectives might enhance our understanding of human history, and more specifically, of human nature. However, it is also a clear expression of the ways in which seemingly intractable theoretical problems become stalled, thereby losing their capacity to continuously attract the interest of archaeologists.
