Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
摘要
A psychological trauma is defined as the result of a brief or prolonged stressful event that lies outside the usual human experience and that would be extremely stressful for any human being. Examples include natural disasters, hostilities, road accidents, diagnosis of an incurable disease, intensive care treatment, terrorism, rape, and other violent crimes. The most important characteristic is the strong discrepancy between the external threat and the available coping skills. Feelings of being at the mercy of others, helplessness, fear, and horror are frequent psychological reactions and lead to a permanent shock of the understanding of oneself and the world. When visiting a doctor, patients complain about sleep problems, unclear physical complaints, inner absence, nervousness, fear, sadness, and many other symptoms, which, in summary, can only be understood as “post-traumatic.” Treatment of PTSD should be provided by psychotherapists and include trauma exposition.
