Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurring, unwanted thoughts, and repetitive behaviors or rituals that individuals feel compelled to perform. OCD affects approximately 1%–1.8% of the global population. The average age of onset for OCD is around 19 years old. Around 50% of people with OCD experience symptoms before the age of 18. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with OCD than men. Approximately one-third of people with OCD also have a tic disorder. The most common obsessions include contamination fears, fear of harm or danger, and unwanted sexual thoughts or images. Common compulsions include excessive cleaning or handwashing, checking behaviors, and repeating actions or words. People with OCD often experience significant distress and impairment in their daily lives due to their symptoms. Around one-third of people with OCD do not receive appropriate treatment for their condition. With appropriate treatment, many people with OCD are able to manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives.
