In this chapter, the authors examine the state of current technology with respect to defence, security and warfare in the age of artificial intelligence and robotics. Recent developments in Ukraine and the Middle East have underlined the importance of AI in shaping the nature of modern warfare. Through this chapter, a historical overview of how automation in warfare has developed over the last century is provided; following this, an examination of current technology looks at developments on land, sea and air, and how these emerging technologies will change the nature of warfare. In addition, a summary of how AI will affect strategic defence is provided. Following this, each of the three authors—from the worlds of politics, the military and think tanks—provide their own perspective on what these developments will mean for policy-makers.
