Comprehensive Feeding Assessment for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum: Exploring Multidisciplinary Approaches with Emphasis on Individual and Cultural Considerations
摘要
Adequate nutrition is key for healthy growth and development. Unfortunately, for individuals on the autism spectrum, feeding difficulties are a common concern and, therefore, their growth and development may be compromised by inadequate nutrition. Given the chronic and pervasive nature of feeding and other associated eating difficulties in the autistic community, interventions to improve nutrition are needed. Before proper treatment can occur, a comprehensive behavioral, medical, and developmental feeding assessment should occur. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the value of working within a multidisciplinary team for assessing feeding difficulties in autistic individuals. We review the various provider roles during a multidisciplinary feeding assessment when formulating targeted interventions. Further, we discuss the importance of considering the role of the individual and their family, as well as their preferences, values, and family culture when formulating an assessment plan.
