Autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders have become among the most discussed and studied in the field of mental health. Also, there are many controversies about what constitutes autism, whether it should be treated or indeed whether it should be considered an atypical aspect of the human condition. These and other critical issues also are implicated with respect to ethical concerns. This chapter tackles some of these ethical issues. An effort is made to point out differing positions and goals as they apply to the assessment and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
