This chapter focuses on the profound importance of projected future climate change for the design process of bioclimatic buildings. For a successful, climate-adapted bioclimatic design, it is essential to consider not only the current climate but also the state of the future climate. The primary goal is to identify the most effective bioclimatic design measures under projected future climatic conditions and apply them to both new construction and existing buildings undergoing retrofits. The notion mentioned above is of particular importance in the light of the acknowledged anthropogenically induced climate change, which is characterised by an unprecedented speed and magnitude that is unlikely to revert during the current century. This chapter outlines the naturally and anthropogenically induced climate change since the end of the last glacial period, with a particular focus on projections of the future state of the Earth’s climate. The chapter then presents a bioclimatic potential analysis of selected locations under the projected climate change. These results are subsequently correlated with the analysis of the projected impacts on future energy use in buildings, including a discussion of the implications and inherent limitations of energy retrofits.

摘要
