When my friend and former National Geographic colleague, Josh Korenblat, invited me to contribute a chapter on international sustainability work, I reflected on my formative experience two decades ago in Mali, West AfricaAfrica, as well as the lessons learned over the years leading to the development of Cornell’s first Cross-campus Sustainability Leadershipsustainability leadership Program. My work and research in Sub-Saharan AfricaAfrica and my efforts in educating the next generation have been through the lens of respectful communication and dialogue, intentional partnership, and community-led initiatives. In Mali, I learned the value of participatory methods, which placeplace listening, inclusion, and collaborationcollaboration at their core.
