Sustainability Leadership at Universities: Why it Matters

Universities play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development, yet their success largely depends on effective and committed leadership. This article examines sustainability leadership in higher education through a real-world case from one of the oldest public universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where a proposed sustainability roadmap was presented to senior management. The case highlights the gap between national climate commitments, particularly Saudi Vision 2030, and institutional implementation at the campus level. Drawing on international benchmarks, sustainability ranking frameworks, and relevant literature, the article identifies leadership as a critical driver for institutionalizing sustainability in academics, operations, and governance. Key barriers—including limited executive commitment, insufficient awareness, and financial constraints—are discussed, alongside the strategic value of establishing dedicated sustainability offices and adopting holistic, top-down approaches. The study argues that universities, as living laboratories, must demonstrate bold leadership to translate policy ambitions into measurable action, positioning sustainability as a core institutional priority rather than a peripheral initiative.
