Paradise Lost and Regained: When Sustainable Development Goals Are Not Enough

This article argues that the journey toward a regenerative future necessitates a collective commitment to transforming our relationship with the earth and each other. By recognizing the multifaceted benefits of gardening and community engagement, we can foster resilience and sustainability that transcends the limitations of the current SDGs. The examples shared when outlining principles of the ‘pedagogy of be-longing.’ In two case studies, we not only address immediate ecological concerns but also lay the groundwork for a more equitable and harmonious coexistence with nature, ultimately contributing to the achievement of a more sustainable and just world. The garden project Mintopia, a National Plant Collection (NPC) of Mentha, in the United Kingdom embodies a holistic approach to gardening that transcends mere cultivation for personal benefit. The Utopian Stories project brings new ideas of how to co-live in environmentally just futures where humans are living in future harmony with each other and the world. These two cases show that growing, in praxis as well as in imagination, creates new potentialities for living well together.
