Impact of High-Speed Rail Corridor Development on the Farming Community: A Case Study of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor in India
摘要
Japan has led the revolution in transportation by introducing the first high-speed rail over 60 years ago. France, Germany, and other European countries followed this evolution of faster transportation. However, India joined this development after 2017 with the construction of a high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, a collaborative effort between Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan. While the project has been promising in its transition of the Indian economy, it carries both positive and negative implications. The high-speed rail project was no different; it has faced resistance from individuals who fear losing their livelihoods and being displaced due to the project’s implementation. This paper attempted to examine the socio-economic impact of high-speed rail development on the people affected by the project. The study employed a purposive sampling method to collect data from 304 farming communities impacted by the project’s implementation. The results of the study clearly indicate that there have been significant lapses in planning the project’s execution; although the government has provided compensation to the farmers, many were inadequately compensated.
