This chapter explores the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in promoting sustainability to meet the challenges of the Anthropocene era. It highlights that these challenges are caused by excessive growth of human populations, and global consumption and production, that have resulted in an imbalance between humans and nature. HEIs that produce new knowledge and educate citizens are well positioned to play a vital role in achieving global sustainability goals as articulated in the Global Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. We identify three key areas where HEIs can contribute: developing sustainability curricula, implementing sustainable campus operations and initiatives, and fostering community engagement partnerships that support sustainability. Subsequent chapters will examine these areas from an integrated stakeholder relationship quality management (RQM) perspective.

摘要
