I argue in this chapter that Yoruba playwrights, in general, ensure strict compliance with cultural norms when assigning names to their characters. The chapter claims that the playwrights are aware of the indispensable role of names in Yoruba culture, therefore, they make a good use of names and naming to express opinions or pass philosophical comments on characters and roles assigned to them. The study reveals that Yoruba playwrights inscribe in their works their onomastic curiosity, and an examination of names, their functions, their origins, their peculiarities, and their exploitable suggestiveness remains essential to our understanding of drama and the dramatist. The chapter concludes that names in the writing of Yoruba playwrights are windows into their artistic methods: they reveal the playwrights’ maneuvering hands, their intentions, their framework, and their literary superstructure. Names help to identify character types, reflect the philosophical and moral positions that the characters represent, and provide clues to the meaning of texts. Consequently, names for Yoruba playwrights are not mere ornamental device, but vital aspect of their literary art.
