The aim of this introduction is to describe the relevance of the edited volume, to delineate the research gap, and to identify the main questions and the distinguishing features of the book. It places special emphasis on the usefulness and benefits of a human geography, or space-sensitive, perspective on future technologies and associated imaginaries. It is structured along three main arguments. First, spatiality is an inherent dimension of sociotechnical imaginaries, i.e. sociotechnical imaginaries and imaginaries of spatial order and development are mutually intertwined. Second, future technologies provide a fertile research field to demonstrate not only the extent to which technologies are power-laden and inherently normative, but also sites of conflict where antagonisms as well as contradictions between different sociotechnical trajectories become apparent. Third, we suggest a research agenda that delineates the co-constitution of sociotechnical and place imaginaries, the representational spaces of future technologies and their performativity in terms of spatial transformation. This enables us to move beyond a mere critique of technological fixes and allows us to understand the latter as products of specific socio-spatial visions of the future.

摘要
