Telemedicine, the practice of health care from a distance using digital technologies, can be incredibly effective in enhancing patient access, especially during catastrophic events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review critically appraises the impact of telemedicine on patient outcomes and access and the future of telemedicine in healthcare. Searches were performed using MeSH terms and keywords in electronic databases in 2019 and 2020. In addition, reference lists of articles identified manually were screened. Empirical studies (both quantitative and qualitative) reported on telemedicine for patient populations were included in the review. Themes related to patient outcomes and access to telemedicine were extracted from the reviewed research. It is known that telemedicine improves patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and compliance specifically in diabetes and in mental illness. It connects doctors with patients in rural areas through online consultations and remote patient monitoring, eliminating travel costs. It also makes it much more accessible for those with limited mobility and allows for equal care for minorities and low SES populations, chronic disease management is completely being redefined especially for diabetes and it saves money. Telehealth platforms elevate diabetes management and patient involvement in their care and contribute to enhanced clinical metrics, including HbA1c, and levels of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Telemedicine for diabetes related foot disease (DFD) provides not only effective remote treatment, but specialized care as well, increasing access and patient satisfaction. It is integral to the control of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and could revolutionize the nature of healthcare delivery through increased patient involvement and the ability to overcome physical barriers.
