Space law has two distinct and closely connected elements. One is the set of international treaties drafted by the United NationsUnited Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOSUnited Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS)) in the 1960s and 1970s and open for ratification by nations. The other is national laws and regulations that implement and supplement those treatyTreaty obligations. Today there are 135 nations that have either ratified or signed the Outer SpaceTreaty TreatyOuter Space Treaty (OST). Treaties are legally and internationally considered to be the supreme law of the nations that ratify a treatyTreaty. However, nations are free to interpret and define those obligations to reflect the society and economy of their peoples.
