For over half a century after Apollo, credible Mars mission architectures have been proposed, but never implemented. Current studies are considering a number of architecture options ranging from minimal exploration missions to expansive visions of colonization. There are a number of key technological challenges, but the key hurdle will be designing an implementable approach that can secure firm funding commitments from the sponsoring governments.
