Critical Thinking and ChatGPT: Navigating Diversity in English Language Education

This chapter seeks to explore the incorporation of critical thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI) into English language education. Specifically, it focuses on how ChatGPT can both support and challenge the concept of diversity in English language education. Drawing on a critical lens, the chapter examines the potential of ChatGPT in catering for learner diversity while unveiling its limitations and inherent biases. The chapter also argues that the algorithms of AI may mirror the biases embedded in their training datasets, which can exacerbate inequalities in educational settings. Hence, teachers play a crucial role in incorporating AI thoughtfully to promote equity and inclusion. Moreover, this chapter recommends that teachers develop strategies that harness the strengths of AI while remaining aware of its limitations. The chapter concludes with concrete examples to demonstrate how CT and AI can be integrated into English language instruction to create a more equitable and inclusive classroom.
