Cattle
摘要
The lives of humans and cattle have been intertwined for over 9000 years. Cattle have been worshiped as gods, sacrificed to gods, used as beasts of burden and providers of milk, meat and leather. Today, there are approximately 940 million cattle worldwide, the majority being reared for meat or milk production. Cattle are also used in research, as beasts of burden, sporting animals and pets. Both Nietzsche and Frankl acknowledged that life and suffering are entwined, both from philosophical and physical points of view. Parturition engenders pain and suffering and is notable in cattle, while misadventure and injury are a part of life for all animals. Commercial cattle production involves several elective husbandry procedures that are painful. This chapter investigates the domestication and natural history of cattle, the sources of pain and its management.
