Ecological Overshoot: The Blindspot of Sustainable Computing

Sustainable computing has mainly focused on reducing the carbon footprint of digital systems, while largely overlooking the broader ecological footprint, despite the urgency of the global ecological crisis and ecological overshoot. To address this gap, we conducted two studies: (1) an analysis of 60 years of ecological data using SHAP to assess carbon’s role within the full footprint, and (2) a discourse analysis of 58 HotCarbon papers using LDA and BERTopic to examine ecological framing in research. Results show carbon is just one of many critical ecological factors, yet research remains carbon-centric. We argue for expanding sustainable computing beyond carbon to better address today’s environmental challenges.
