Subjectivity, the They-Self, and the Contexts of Violence
摘要
The role of subjectivity takes on a decidedly different articulation when placed within a context that is constructed by various manifestations of violence. Whether this violence is performed by the cop, the hit man, the soldier, the spy, terrorist or mass murderer, its legitimacy is often predicated by the way in which that context determines the meaning of that act. Taken from this perspective, being-in-the-world-as-someone is always in relation to a specific manifestation of the They-Self, which in turn constructs the possibility for this type of being. However, given the layered structuring of the They-Self, human being is often confronted with a variety of overlapping meanings, which are often in contradiction to these competing versions of the They. How these contradictions are experienced, lived and ultimately resolved, becomes predicated by one’s fidelity to the law of that manifestation of the They-Self.
