This chapter discusses how the canceling attitude denied Russian artists, singers, writers, and cultural figures recognition in the West as representatives of “Putin’s Russia.” Western presentations of the Russian Orthodox Church were largely focused on its leadership’s support for the war and special ties to Putin. Many in the West linked the aggressive war in Ukraine to Russian culture and history. Critics of Russia often wanted to see not only the humiliation and defeat of Russia in the war, rejecting any possibility of compromise and dialogue, but also insisted on “canceling” the entire Russian culture and literature as imperialist and aggressive.
