The town of Cooch Behar, the capital of the erstwhile Koch dynasty, has recently been conferred with the heritage tag from the Government of West Bengal. The town, already famous for its palaces, temples, and the iconic Ras Mela, draws thousands of tourists every year. The newly earned heritage status is supposed to boost the tourism economy in the town. But without a proper development of tourism-related infrastructure along with the participation and empowerment of the stakeholders, this endeavor cannot be realized as a sustainable one. Right now, there is a serious gap in studies regarding this matter. The present research aims to address this issue by identifying the existing and potential tourism sites in Cooch Behar Town, by measuring the preparedness of all stakeholders through statistical analysis in light of the tourist infrastructure of the town and its scope for future growth. It further aims to strategize sustainable management of tourism in the town, which may benefit both the tourists as well as the host community, via analyzing the collected empirical data. The authors hope that the findings might help the competent authorities in implementing sustainable heritage and tourism management in the town.
