Sustainable Tourism and Waste Management Challenges of Gangtok City in Sikkim

Gangtok cityGangtok city is an important tourist destination in Sikkim, which attracts millions of tourists annually. However, the rapid growth of tourism has created significant challenges in waste managementWaste management, which has threatened the city’s environmentalSustainability sustainabilityEnvironmental sustainability. With the influx of tourism-related waste, it is challenging to solve the problems of waste management and maintain the stability and integrity of Gangtok. This book chapter examines the impact of tourism on waste accumulation, identifies the key environmental challengesEnvironmental challenges related to waste managementWaste management, and suggests sustainable methods to properly deal with the growing problems. During the field survey, it was found that the city has limited landfill sites, ineffective collection infrastructure, and poor tourist awareness, which made the situation destabilized. Ensuring effective waste separation at the source, developing and recycling infrastructure, strict legislation, and enthusiasts of environmentally responsible tourism can significantly reduce waste deposits. For effective waste managementWaste management, it is essential to think in a sustainable way through government initiatives, technical interventions, and community participation.
