Patients (both individual patients and patient organisations) are key experts at all steps of medicinal product evaluation. The French National Authority for Health considers patients as essential actors of HTA and provides these experts with specific training. This chapter outlines the processes for appraisal of clinical effectiveness of medicines in France and the evolution of patient participation therein. It is anticipated that the role of patients will progressively increase in areas such as clinical trial methodology, health economics, and public health. Success in this evolution requires a careful balance between patient advocacy and scientific rigor, while ensuring independence of various stakeholders.
