Latin America and the Caribbean: Evolving Approaches to Involving Patients in HTA
摘要
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) has grown significantly in the past decade in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Besides enhanced technical capabilities and processes, there is a growing trend of openness to public participation and, in some cases, a specific focus on it. This chapter reviews the status of patient involvement in ten LAC countries and examines progress in Colombia, Chile, and Brazil in more detail. Some conclusions are presented to inform future initiatives. Patient involvement in HTA is not widespread in LAC, but some countries are in the early stages of implementing an approach, particularly participation processes. A few others appear to be near to, or in the design stage for a patient participation process. It will be essential for HTA systems in the region and patients and patient organisations to share knowledge and best practices with each other as mechanisms for patient involvement advance.
